There are approximately 1800 radios distributed across Government Departments

Hazard Management Cayman Islands and the Office of Telecommunications (OFTEL) have now merged into a single agency. Chief Officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Eric Bush explained, “For some time Government has been looking systematically at ways to reduce costs and increase efficiency. In light of the current financial restraints the merger made sense, there were sufficient similarities and complimentary functions to justify the amalgamation.”

The Office of Telecommunications was created in the aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 when it was determined that the Islands needed a fully functional trunked radio system to allow all Government agencies to communicate with each other and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

On 17 May 2013, HMCI assumed the responsibility for the management and maintenance aspects of the operations and assets. Customers can contact HMCI directly at (345) 945-4624. To meet with technicians and staff in person, please visit Hazard Management Cayman Islands, 4th Floor, Government Administration Building, Elgin Avenue.

Hazard Management Director, McCleary Frederick explained, “Government Agencies and private sector partners who were using OFTEL services in the past can continue expect access to the full range of services. The merger will have no impact on the availability of service. The transition has been smooth and seamless.”

There are approximately 1800 radios that are distributed across many Government Agencies and the network offers encryption services and coverage for all three Islands (Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman).
